The Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) is pleased to announce that tree trimming, pruning, and rehabilitation at the Panama Reserve will commence on Monday, 21 October 2024 as part of the Te Tau Papa o Avarua / Avarua Town Plan. This beautification initiative will enhance the area’s natural environment while improving public safety.

The work will be carried out by Baker Tree Services (BTS) and is scheduled to take approximately eight weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions.

Project Scope and Impact

The rehabilitation work will extend from the town-side of the Panama Catholic Cemetery to the airport-side of the Avatiu Wharf Ramp. The primary goals are to ensure the health and longevity of the trees while minimizing any risk to the public.

CIIC assures the public that vehicular traffic will not be disrupted, and no road closures are anticipated. However, traffic signs will be installed between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays when tree maintenance is being conducted near the roadside.

For public safety, pedestrian access will be restricted during working hours as follows:

  • Monday & Tuesday: 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday to Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Temporary Closures

Parking areas and storage spaces within the Panama Reserve, particularly those close to active work zones, will be temporarily closed. These areas will be marked with caution tape, cones, and clear signage to ensure public safety.

Progress Updates and Public Engagement

Weekly updates on the “Panama Reserve Tree Works” will be provided through the CIIC Facebook page to keep the community informed.

CIIC apologizes for any inconvenience caused by these works and thanks the public for their cooperation and understanding throughout the project.
