The Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) has commenced the relocation of the Are Pa Metua building from the Punanga Nui Market (PNM) as part of a broader market redevelopment programme.

Whilst a final spot is being confirmed, the building will move to a site on the back road opposite the Apii Nikao (Avatea) sports field.

The move, which has been planned for some time, follows public consultation and engagement with Te Are Pa Metua patrons; is part of the wider reorganisation of space at the market. The relocation will allow for more flexible use of land around the market’s central eatery and playground areas, while giving Are Pa Metua a more usable and dedicated space for their community gatherings.

The relocation is a necessary step to support future improvements at the market and to provide Are Pa Metua with a dedicated space that better suits their ongoing use of the facility.

Preparatory works began last week, including the careful dismantling of the building in readiness for its move. Subject to weather and subcontractor availability, the building is expected to be relocated from the market site beginning at 5am this Thursday.

“We acknowledge that this process represents a change in scenery and temporary disruption for the Are Pa Metua community, and we are working with them to achieve the best long-term outcome” says a CIIC spokesperson.

“We are grateful for the patience of the Are Pa Metua patrons and the public while relocation works are underway. Our goal is to minimise disruption and ensure the building is safely relocated to a site that supports its continued community use.”

CIIC has prepared a truck route in collaboration with CI Police for transporting the building. The route will follow the main road and seawall area.

Members of the public are kindly asked to take extra care in and around the market precinct and along the transport route during the relocation, particularly while machinery and heavy vehicles are operating.

CIIC is continuing to liaise with Are Pa Metua members and stakeholders to manage the final relocation respectfully and transparently. Further updates will be provided as decisions are made.
