The ‘Social Centre’ is one of Rarotonga’s most popular public spaces — a place enjoyed by families, sports groups, fishers, growers and visitors alike. Over the past year, Government has continued to invest in improvements to ensure the area is safe, well-maintained, and accessible for everyone. These upgrades include new public toilet and shower facilities, water-conservation measures, improved waste management, and increased Police patrols to support community safety.
As we head into the festive season, the number of people using the Social Centre and surrounding beach areas is expected to grow. To help everyone enjoy the space safely and fairly, the Cook Islands Investment Corporation is reminding the public of a few important guidelines.
Public beach areas cannot be reserved
The beach and foreshore remain public land for the enjoyment of all. Items left to “hold” or reserve a spot — including tents, ropes, stakes, furniture or personal belongings — restrict access for others and will be removed.
Camping is not permitted
While some families have developed traditions of setting up for extended periods, the increased use of the area means this is no longer practical or safe. Camping and overnight occupation of the Social Centre grounds, including the unpaved footpaths and driveways, is not permitted.
No liquor consumption
The Social Centre, including the carpark and adjacent beach areas, is a public, family-friendly space. The consumption of alcohol in these areas is not permitted and will be monitored as part of ongoing community safety measures.
Keeping access ways open
The driveways, walkways and beachfront access points through the Social Centre must remain clear at all times for public use, emergency access, and safe pedestrian movement.
A shared space for all
We acknowledge that the way people use the Social Centre has evolved over time. With more residents and visitors enjoying the area, we ask everyone to be considerate, to follow the guidelines, and to help keep the Social Centre open, clean, and accessible for all.
CIIC appreciates the cooperation of the Nikao community, fishers, growers and all Social Centre users in ensuring this popular area remains a welcoming public space throughout the festive season and beyond.
