A new entrance sign for the Punanga Nui Market was officially unveiled yesterday, marking another step in the ongoing revitalisation of one of Rarotonga’s most iconic community spaces.
The unveiling was attended by the Minister responsible for the Cook Islands Investment Corporation, Hon. Albert Nicholas, and the Minister responsible for Punanga Nui Market, Hon. George Angene, alongside market vendors and members of the community.
The new sign was unveiled by Minister Nicholas together with the market’s “Mama” vendors and was blessed by Fr. Jun of the Catholic Church.
Cook Islands Investment Corporation Chief Executive Officer Allan Jensen said the new sign is a simple but important addition to the market.
“Punanga Nui Market is a special place for both our local community and our visitors. This new sign reflects the pride we have in the market and the role it plays in showcasing our culture, our people and our local enterprise.”
The sign was crafted by local signmaker Raymond Solomon of Raro Signs, who was engaged to bring the design to life, incorporating elements that reflect Cook Islands identity and the vibrancy of the market.
Market Manager William Taripo said the unveiling was well supported by vendors, with many coming together to celebrate the occasion.
“Our vendors are the heart of the market, and it was wonderful to have them there to be part of this moment. The new sign helps create a welcoming entrance and adds to the overall experience for everyone who visits.”
As part of the enhancements to the market entrance, a purple jacaranda tree was also planted to provide shade in the future, generously supplied by Mama Sonya Kamana.
The new sign forms part of broader improvements underway at Punanga Nui Market, aimed at enhancing the space for vendors, locals and visitors alike.
