The Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) is pleased to report solid progress on the Te Tapora Kai Farmers Market development at Taua Terevete. With construction now well advanced under CIIC’s direct project management, the build is gaining momentum and benefiting from strengthened community partnerships.
Earlier this year, CIIC made the decision to bring the Te Tapora Kai project in-house, a move that coincided with the conclusion of previous contractor arrangements. This transition has enabled CIIC to maintain greater oversight and ensure alignment with quality, accountability, and delivery standards.
Since assuming direct project management, CIIC has adopted a refreshed, community-focused approach — contracting multiple local suppliers and tradespeople to deliver the works. This collaborative model has brought a broader range of skills to the project, increased delivery flexibility, and created more opportunities for local businesses to contribute meaningfully to infrastructure development. Importantly, it has fostered a stronger sense of ownership and pride, with economic and social benefits now being shared more widely across the community.
“Te Tapora Kai is a project of national significance,” says CIIC Chief Executive r Allan Jensen. “We are proud to be delivering it through strong local collaboration. By engaging directly with Cook Islands-based suppliers and tradespeople, we are not only ensuring steady progress — we are ensuring the economic benefits remain within our community.”
When completed, Te Tapora Kai will host over 70 grassroots vendors in a large, modern, open plan building designed to combine functionality with the vibrant spirit of the Cook Islands. The facility will provide improved shelter and amenities for vendors and visitors alike, creating a comfortable and welcoming space for local enterprise. From fresh produce and culinary delights to handmade crafts, the market will serve as a central hub of Cook Islands’ trade, tradition, and togetherness.
Construction remains on track for completion in August 2025, with key structural components now well underway. Once finished, the purpose-built facility will become a cornerstone of the broader Punanga Nui Market precinct.
“This project is about more than just infrastructure—it’s about people,” says CIIC Project Manager Alana Short. “Farmers, food vendors, artisans, and families will all benefit from a vibrant space that celebrates our culture, commerce, and community. Our team is fully committed to completing Te Tapora Kai and delivering a space that locals can be proud of and visitors will admire.”
Te Tapora Kai is a key feature of Te Tau Papa O Avarua (TTPA) Phase 1. Developments at the Taua Terevete site also include:
- An information hub with ATM access, toilets, and a public transport waiting area
- A new PNM office and ocean-view dining area for Maroro Hut vendors and patrons
- An additional accessible toilet block near the Terevete pavilion
- A new promenade along the coastal fringe
- A large carpark and pedestrian walkways to improve site flow and accessibility.
Further details on vendor registration and the official launch event will be announced in the coming months, as CIIC prepares to celebrate the opening of Te Tapora Kai and an exciting new chapter for the Punanga Nui Market.
