Rakahanga has achieved a major milestone with the successful completion of key upgrades to its essential public infrastructure. The project, completed in October 2024, has delivered much-needed improvements to the island’s school, hospital, and Island Administration Offices—enhancing services and facilities that are central to the wellbeing of the local community.

The upgrade initiative was led by the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) in partnership with the Rakahanga Island Government (RIG), with support from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Te Marae Ora (TMO). The project aimed to improve the functionality, safety, and longevity of these vital public buildings.

While the works experienced some delays—mainly due to shipping logistics and the limited availability of resident skilled workers—the results have been welcomed by the community as a significant step forward.

Enhancing Rakahanga School

At the heart of the project was Rakahanga School, which received a complete roof overhaul, as well as refurbishments to classrooms, storerooms, and the kitchen. The main building was repainted, and with the support of the Ministry of Education, ceiling fans were installed to create a more comfortable learning environment for students and staff alike.

“The upgrades to the school are a huge step forward for the community,” said Toka Basil Hagai, Executive Officer for the Rakahanga Island Government. “These improvements not only provide better facilities for our students and teachers but also create a more welcoming environment for everyone who uses the school. This project is important for our island, and we’re thankful for the hard work that went into it.”

Upgrades to the Hospital and Administration Office

Rakahanga Hospital also saw key improvements, including an expanded main entrance to enhance accessibility for all patients, particularly those with mobility challenges. These changes have made the facility more functional and better equipped to meet the needs of the island’s population.

The Island Administration Offices underwent an important electrical upgrade, with new power points and circuits installed to improve safety and performance in service delivery.

Community-Led, Community-Benefiting

Vasie Ngatoko-Poila, General Manager for CIIC’s Asset Management Division, reflected on the significance of the completed works.

“This project was a long time coming, but it’s fulfilling to see how far we’ve come,” she said. “Despite the delays, we are pleased with the results. The work carried out has made a positive difference to the community and the services it relies on. Our goal has always been to deliver something that would stand the test of time, and it’s great to see that realised. Of course, there’s always more work to do—so like all other Pa Enua, we will continue working closely with the Rakahanga Island Government and other agencies on priority initiatives.”

Local residents also played a critical role, stepping in to assist where materials were scarce, providing support and lending a hand throughout the project. Their contributions ensured that work continued despite logistical challenges, and their efforts have been acknowledged and greatly appreciated by all involved.

Looking Ahead

With these upgrades now complete, Rakahanga has safer, more accessible, and better-equipped public facilities. This successful project stands as a testament to the collaboration between CIIC, RIG, and the community—and reflects the strength and resilience of the people of Rakahanga.

The recent upgrades also pave the way for future development on the island, including the rollout of the ATOM Project and construction of the planned Rakahanga Cyclone Centre.
