Taoro Brown Steps Down as Airport Authority Chair After 10 Years of Dedicated Service Appointed Executive Officer for Atiu Island Government Former Minister Patrick Arioka Named Acting Chairperson

By Ruanoo Mose

After a decade of dedicated leadership, Taoro Brown has stepped down as Chairperson of the Cook Islands Airport Authority to take up his new role as Executive Officer (EO) for the Atiu Island Government. Former Cabinet Minister and experienced public servant Patrick Arioka has been appointed Acting Chairperson.

Reflecting on Mr. Brown’s contributions, Fletcher Melvin, Chairperson of the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC), expressed gratitude for his invaluable service.

“Taoro’s commitment and leadership have not only steered the Airport Authority through the past ten years but have also made a lasting impact on the Cook Islands’ aviation sector,” said Mr. Melvin. “While we will miss his expertise at the Authority, it is heartening to see him embark on this new chapter in service to the people of Atiu. We thank him for his unwavering dedication and wish him and his family every success.”

During his 20-year career in aviation, including 10 years on the Airport Authority board, Mr. Brown played a key role in several significant projects, such as replacing 22 runway slabs and organising the Rarotonga Airport’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Brown is a respected entrepreneur, owning the Super Brown franchises in Rarotonga and Atiu. He is also celebrated as a cultural ambassador, representing the Cook Islands on international stages, and as a dedicated supporter of the Atiu community.

Incoming Acting Chairperson Patrick Arioka brings extensive governance experience and a strong background in disaster preparedness and infrastructure consultancy. His previous roles include Policy and Economic Director at the Ministry of Agriculture and President of the Cook Islands Red Cross Society, where he served on the board for 13 years.

“I am honoured to take on this role and excited to work alongside the talented Airport Authority team to build on Taoro’s legacy,” said Mr. Arioka. “I look forward to contributing to the continued growth and success of our country’s aviation sector.”

To focus on his new responsibilities as Acting Chairperson, Mr. Arioka has stepped down from his position as a Director on the CIIC board.
